Whirlwind olive oil to sustain North-pole trekker

The North-pole is a long way from Margaret River – in actual fact, it is probably difficult to get further away.  But a little piece of Western Australia will be making its way there in March 2010, when Tom Smitheringale attempts a solo and unassisted trek from the northern-most tip of Canada.

Tom is already a solid sort, standing at 6 feet 7 inches or 200 centimetres tall, weighing in at 110 kilograms.  However, to provide enough energy and protection from the cold, Tom will need to gain another 20 kilograms, and drinking 250ml of Whirlwind olive oil every day will help him do it.

Unassisted means that from the time of his departure through to his return, he will be completely alone with his equipment and sled – a journey of almost two months which only two other people in history have completed.

Regular updates and a news feed will be available here at the Whirlwind olives site too.
